Every Day is a Gift
— by Debbie LeCompte
In 2008, fresh with my Breast Cancer diagnosis, Debbie and several other amazing women surrounded me with their love, hugs, prayers and yes, their laughter (especially when they took me on a crazy trip to shop for a wig!). We had no idea at the time that Debbie would one day undertake the same journey that so many women (and far too many men) must face, too. When I tell you Debbie has been a warrior armed with grace, courage, self-advocacy, hope and faith, it only begins to reveal just how special she is. She has been an authentic inspiration in the battle for other warriors and for her family and friends. I’m glad to know and witness such a blessed and powerful force. I love you, Debbie..

“Get into the habit of self-examination monthly. This is so important for early detection of breast cancer. I am living proof of this.”
Ladies, DON’T FORGET SELF-BREAST EXAMS!
This is so important. Many breast malignancies are detected this way. So simple, yet sometimes ignored. I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ in 2016. I was awakened at 2am one morning with this inner urge to do a breast exam. I found a mass so small that it went undetected by mammogram and breast ultrasound. Due to my family history of breast cancer (maternal grandmother), my surgeon elected to do a lumpectomy. The lab results confirmed the DCIS - Stage 0.
I was closely monitored by my surgeon for years. I was 7 1/2 years cancer free when through a self-breast exam I found another small mass. Lumpectomy and again, DCIS, Stage O. Within the next 13 months, I had three more biopsies and two of them were positive. Same diagnosis. After surgical consultation, the decision was made for a Bilateral Mastectomy followed up with reconstructive breast surgery six months post- op. I am currently awaiting this to be scheduled.
Get into the habit of self-examination monthly. This is so important for early detection of breast cancer. I am living proof of this.
“I am so grateful for the support of my family and friends. The Lord is in control of my life and every day is a gift.”
I also want to express my gratitude for my friend, Tina, for asking me to share my story of Hope.
